Course Description
The 16th Annual Scientific Meeting will provide practitioners and researchers with an expanded and current understanding of the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and research of disorders associated with chronic pelvic pain. The meeting emphasizes the multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to the management of chronic pelvic pain. Anyone with an interest in this prevalent healthcare problem is invited to attend: primary care providers, gynecologists, nurses, urologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, neurologists, physical therapists, psychiatrists, neuroscientists. Presentations will combine research findings and clinical care patterns and practices important to the care of women and men afflicted by chronic pelvic pain. For providers who need a more broad understanding of pelvic neuro-anatomy, physiology, and available treatments, additional workshops will provide a more comprehensive overview of the evaluation of chronic pelvic pain.

Course Title
Understanding the Spectrum of Diagnoses and Treatments for Chronic Pelvic Pain Disorders

Needs Statement
It is known that millions of patients suffer with disorders that cause chronic pelvic pain. The social, psychological and financial costs associated with treatments of these disorders are enormous. Yet, less than 10% of patients are receiving care from a provider trained in management of chronic pain disorders. Many patients endure being misdiagnosed or receiving inappropriate treatment because of the practitioner’s lack of knowledge on this subject. Unless practitioners and researchers are educated about factors that affect patient care, treatment outcomes and research in chronic pelvic pain disorders, it is likely that patients with chronic pelvic pain will continue to lack appropriate treatment in the future. Furthermore, without exchange of clinical and research information across all disciplines encompassing the treatment of chronic pelvic pain, advances in treatment options for these patients will not be possible.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this meeting, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the neurobiologic and psychosocial factors affecting patients with chronic pelvic pain disorders
  • Recognize the contributions of the gastrointestinal, urologic, musculoskeletal and central nervous systems to the development of chronic pelvic pain
  • Report the current status of chronic pelvic pain in the community and when appropriate referral should be made
  • Describe available treatment options for disorders of female and male chronic pelvic pain including irritable bowel syndrome, interstitial cystitis, and myofascial pain syndromes
  • Explain the necessary steps in the establishment of multidisciplinary pain treatment teams
  • Identify a referral network for resources specific to the needs of patients with chronic pelvic pain
  • Assess the importance of the changing environment of the healthcare provider / patient relationship

Lake Buena Vista/Orlando Florida
Lake Buena Vista is a small city in Orange County, Florida, south of downtown Orlando. While its population is a mere 16 people, Lake Buena Vista includes the Walt Disney World Resort® and the property adjacent to its eastern border.

Orlando, a quiet farming town in 1970, now has more visitors than any other place in the state. The reason, of course, is Walt Disney World®, which, along with Universal Studios® Escape, SeaWorld® and a host of themed attractions, pulls more than 25 million people a year to a previously featureless plot of scrubland. Despite enormous expansion over the last decade, the town itself remains free of the commercialism that surrounds it.
